I worked with a woman who made cakes for our parties, birthdays, etc, that were wonderful, like from scratch. I heard they were from a mix and asked her how she got a mix cake to taste so great. She said she always uses buttermilk instead of water and adds an extra egg. You might give this a try. Also, even the pudding cake mixes will be dry if they are baked too long, so bake the cake the least amount of time indicated on the package and then check it. If not done, check it at 5 minute intervals. You don't want your tooth pick inserted to come out clean, it needs to have some moist crumbs attached to it. The cake continues to bake after it comes out of the oven.

I prefer Duncan Hines, but even DH needs a little doctoring up. There is a cookbook out that is all about using already mixed cake mixes, the title is "The Cake Mix Doctor," by Anne Byrn. You might be able to get it at your library. It has lots of recipes for using a cake mix to make brownies, cakes, Icing, etc.
