In baking cake…what is the technique in lining up the sides of round tin?

How to line with the paper the sides of round or oval shape of a tin? I cut round the bottom of the paper,fold it and line it on the sides. (greased). My problem is, my cake is not in good shape and it is becoming smaller but thicker because of the lining. Is there any secret or good technique of lining up the sides of round or oval. Or just don’t line the tinto get the best shape?
